Nick joined Blacks in 2002 from an internationally recognised ‘Leeds Big Six’ firm, and is known for bringing a pragmatic and personal touch to working with clients. Since taking his position as a Partner at Blacks, the Commercial Property team has more than quadrupled in size.
He advises property investors, developers and occupiers as well as funders on acquiring, developing, selling, letting and charging property. He has built up strong relationships with some of the key regional property professionals and is a well-known and respected name in the Leeds legal market for practical, commercial legal advice.
In particular, Nick has developed a niche in the Holiday & Home Parks market, where he has been able to develop strong relationships with experts and operators in the field making Blacks a nationally recognised and reputable name, and the leading firm in the North.
Nick is recognised by the Legal 500 as being "always reliable" and is motivated by helping people be they clients, key advisers or colleagues and enjoys making things happen.
Ian Errington qualified as a Solicitor in 1994 and joined Blacks Solicitors as a Partner in the Commercial Property team in 2016.
Ian was previously a Partner at another Leeds practice where he specialised in site acquisition work for a major supermarket chain based in Bradford.
He has extensive experience in all aspects of commercial property, with a particular emphasis upon the acquisition of complex retail and residential development sites and leads the Firm’s Residential Development team.
Ian has also acted for a wide range of clients from owner occupiers, to local, regional, and FTSE 100 listed developers and housebuilders.
He believes in giving common sense, no nonsense advice and works to conclude deals as simply and as quickly as possible whilst delivering added value to his clients.
Ian is recognised by The Legal 500 for being “excellent at dealing with clients”.
Beth Laidler joined Blacks Solicitors in 2009 where she trained and then qualified in 2011. She became a Partner in 2018 and works in the Commercial Property team.
Beth has an organised and methodical approach to her work for clients who consist of a range of Commercial Property Investors and Developers, and Holiday and Home Park Owners/Operators.
She specialises in commercial sales and purchases, landlord and tenant matters, and the sale and purchase of holiday and home park sites up and down the country.
In March 2018 Beth closed on a three year transaction where she led a team to the successful completion of a £10m investment sale for one of the firm’s longstanding developer clients.
Charlotte Spowage is an Associate Solicitor and has worked at Blacks Solicitors in the Commercial Property team since April 2013.
Prior to studying law Charlotte obtained a degree in English (Creative Writing) from the University of Leeds. After her conversion to law, she trained with a City Centre Leeds firm and qualified as a Solicitor in 2012.
Charlotte advises on a variety of commercial property matters including sales and purchases, landlord and tenant issues, re/financing and pension fund investments.
She specialises in acting in the acquisition and disposal of sites for residential development including options, conditional contracts, and overage agreements. Clients include national housebuilders, independent developers, and landowners.
Anushka Nicholas qualified as a Solicitor in 2004 and joined Blacks Solicitors in 2016, where she is currently a Senior Associate in the Commercial Property team.
Anushka has a reputation for being extremely thorough when acting for her clients, utilising her expert technical knowledge to achieve the best results possible.
She specialises in a wide variety of property transactions and has extensive experience advising on all types of freehold and leasehold property. This includes: dealing with leasehold enfranchisements matters; creation of leasehold interests and variation of leases; overage agreements and pre emption or option agreements; applications for adverse possession; and sale and purchase transactions.
Anushka is recognised by The Legal 500 as “extremely knowledgeable and fights the client’s corner at all times”.
Tristan Milner joined Blacks Solicitors in 2015, where he became an Associate Solicitor in the Commercial Property team in 2018.
Prior to joining Blacks, Tristan qualified as a Solicitor in 2011 having trained at a ‘Silver Circle’ firm in the City of London.
He acts for clients on a variety of commercial property matters including: landlord and tenant work; acquisitions and disposals; re/financing; and development work.
Tristan also advises clients who operate in a range of specialist sectors including Industrial, Retail, Offices, Leisure & Hospitality (including Holiday & Home Parks, Licensed Premises, and Hotels), and Mining.
Jennifer Roberts joined Blacks Solicitors in 2015 and became an Associate Solicitor in the Commercial Property team in 2018.
Before joining Blacks, Jennifer graduated from Keele University with a degree in Law and Criminology in 2007, and went on to continue her legal studies at BPP Law School in Leeds before qualifying as a Solicitor in 2013.
Jennifer is experienced at dealing with acquisitions and disposals, and in particular acts for both landlord and tenants in managing their property portfolios (including negotiating leases, renewals and surrenders).
She also has experience of working for landlords in the acquisition and disposal of multi-let investment properties in the Retail sector.
Marc Warren joined Blacks Solicitors in 2018, and is a Partner in the Commercial Property team.
He studied at Hull University and York College of Law, before spending time working in New Zealand at a top tier law firm where, amongst other clients, he acted for the national airline and national bank.
Marc acts for a variety of clients including corporate occupiers and landlords, investors, developers, lenders and borrowers, and has particular experience of working with airports and retail parks having acted for household name retailers (including supermarket clients) and a leisure travel business.
In addition, Marc acts for high net worth individuals on the acquisition of portfolios in multi-million pound transactions. He also deals with options, sub-sales, and complicated overage and conditional contractual arrangements for buyers, sellers and those financing such arrangements.
Alongside his technical expertise, Marc is known for being persistent, consistent, proactive, and pragmatic. He likes to build long-term relationships with his clients with a focus on delivering results, and recently won an award for providing excellent client service at the national supplier conference of a Yorkshire based airline client.
Matthew Hutchinson qualified as a Solicitor in 2008 and has worked at Blacks Solicitors since 2016. He currently works in the Commercial Property team where he became a Partner in 2018.
Matt has a wide range of experience in commercial property transactions, and has recently assisted clients with complex development transactions, landlord and tenant issues, and sales and purchases.
He regularly works on corporate deals with a property element, with clients including residential developers, landowners, commercial property investment companies, and commercial developers.
In addition, Matt also leads Blacks’ experienced Commercial Property Finance team which specialises in acting for lenders, and borrowers, in property finance transactions. Recent deals have included acting for a developer on financing a part built student accommodation development of 150 units, and acting for a lender on a large industrial portfolio refinance.
Matt is recognised by The Legal 500 as having “strong communication skills and is very level headed”.
Rachael Donnelly qualified as a Solicitor in 2009 and joined Blacks Solicitors in 2017, where she is currently an Associate Solicitor in the Property Litigation team.
Rachael has eight years’ experience of dealing with land and property-based issues, and regularly acts on behalf of landowners, developers, receivers, utility companies, landlords, and tenants.
She also has experience of dealing with matters involving both residential and commercial property, individuals, and corporate clients. Her work includes: business tenancy renewals; landlord and tenant disputes (including service charge and dilapidations claims); possession actions; trespass and nuisance claims; boundary disputes; and issues involving easement, restrictive covenants and wayleaves.
Rachael works closely with her property colleagues advising on large transactions which require specialist litigation input. She focuses on understanding clients’ objectives and provides commercial advice to clients looking to protect or maximise their investment in their property or land.
Rachael is an experienced litigator and is comfortable handling Court and Tribunal actions on behalf of her clients. However, she is well aware of the constraints and costs associated with formal Court proceedings and regularly provides advice on risk management and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR).
Rachael is recommended by The Legal 500 for business tenancy renewals, landlord and tenant disputes, possession actions, trespass claims and boundary disputes.
Claudia Willard qualified in 2015 and joined Blacks Solicitors in November 2017, where she is a Solicitor in the Commercial Property team.
Prior to this, Claudia had gained significant experience in landlord and tenant work on behalf of occupational tenants with a focus on the Retail sector.
Claudia currently deals with a range of commercial property matters including a variety of leasehold transactions, re/financing matters, and supports with all aspects of development transactions.
Ben Finley is a Solicitor in the Commercial Property Team, having trained with the firm and qualified after successfully concluding his six month seat in Commercial Property in September 2018.
Before moving in to law, Ben originally studied History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds.
Ben deals with a variety of leasehold and freehold transactions where he acts for landlords and tenants. He has experience dealing with commercial units and property portfolio work as well as other general retail work. Ben is commended by clients for his friendly and diligent approach.
Emma Wilson joined Blacks Solicitors in 2013 and qualified as a Solicitor in September 2017, and is currently a Solicitor in the Commercial Property team.
Since then, Emma has established herself as a key member of the Team, regularly assisting Partners on high value transactions.
Emma has gained significant experience in a wide range of commercial property matters, including landlord and tenant work, sales and purchases (on both sides of the transaction), re/financing, and development matters.
Marcus Kaye joined Blacks Solicitors in 2017, having qualified in September 2016, and works in the Commercial Property team.
Prior to starting his legal career Marcus attended Leeds Grammar School and obtained a degree in Law and Accountancy from the University of Manchester.
He advises on a variety of Commercial Property matters including landlord and tenant work, sales and purchases, re/financing, bridging finance, and development matters. He has particular expertise of dealing with mixed use sites.
Marcus acts for both developer and investor clients and advises on all aspects of the transaction. He has a detailed understanding of both institutional leases and the commercial approaches.
Charlotte Hart joined Blacks Solicitors in 2018 as a Solicitor in the Commercial Property team.
Charlotte qualified in 2009 and has considerable experience in all aspects of transactional conveyancing work. This includes freehold and leasehold sale and purchase transactions, transfers of equity, refinancing (acting for both individual and corporate clients), land purchases, lease extensions, variation of leases and title rectification.
She also has extensive experience in dealing with new build developments, acting for both developers and purchasers.
