Blacks walks to Barcelona and Back for Breast Cancer Haven

It’s hard to believe that it’s September already! 2020 has been a difficult and strange year for everyone, and charities have also felt the impact of the pandemic, with many fundraising events having to be cancelled.

At Blacks, we got off to a fantastic start fundraising for our charity of the year, Breast Cancer Haven, with an office tombola and cake sale in March, but subsequent fundraising plans were curtailed for obvious reasons.

Our Charity Team therefore had to get creative with fundraising ideas because we couldn’t physically be with each other. In July, we held a lunch time yoga session via Zoom for our #BestStaffInLeeds, delivered by Gaby at Island Soul Yoga, where we charged attendees a small fee to raise money.

We usually do something active during the Summer months, for example, we walked 30km from Bingley to Leeds last year to raise money for Leeds Mind. This year, we drew inspiration from our neighbour, Tilney, and decided to do a remote fundraising challenge to raise money safely for Breast Cancer Haven.

We set ourselves, our families and four-legged friends the challenge of walking, running and cycling (not the dogs, of course) 2,020 miles during the month of August, which was the distance between our City Point office in Leeds to Barcelona and all the way back again.

We each recorded the miles we did using a fitness app and totalled them all up at the end of each week, updating everyone on our progress as we travelled through Europe (virtually!) using emails and our social media platforms. We managed to finish the month on a fantastic total of 2,178 miles.

So far, we have raised nearly £700 for Breast Cancer Haven and if you would like to donate, you can do so here.

Whilst we usually assist a different charity each year, we felt that it was only fair to continue supporting Breast Cancer Haven in 2021 and we’re hoping to be able to arrange more fundraising events in the future to make up for a tricky start, so do keep an eye out for our next one!
