Brownlee Tri Corporate Challenge
The enthusiastic team at Blacks Solicitors are always ‘up’ for a challenge (Cycling from Leeds to Paris, cycling from Newcastle to London non-stop and entering a team in this weekend’s Yorkshire Marathon), so when we were invited to enter the Brownlee Tri Corporate Challenge we couldn’t say no.
The adrenaline was pumping when I arrived at the absolutely stunning grounds of Harewood House early Saturday morning. James Teagle (“the Machine”) and Cat Maguire (“the Blue Marlin”) had arrived, ready and raring to go.
After registration there was a moment of calm before the storm as I wondered around the corporate area. The first wave of triathletes were setting off into the murky waters of Harewood’s lake… all I could think was “thank goodness I’m not doing the swim”. James was positive as ever – aiming for a blistering time with the run, whilst Cat was quietly confident with the swim.
The time had arrived; as we made our way to the start for our race briefing. We were told that Jonathan Brownlee would be swimming in our heat (Cat remained cool as ever). My nerves were building as I memorised the transition routines and made my way to my bike.
Cat was away and finished the swim hot on the heels of Jonathan Brownlee with a scorching time of 13.06 (750m). My time had finally arrived, I got my helmet, took the relay ‘baton’ (a timing chip) from Cat and sprinted away with my bike to the cycle start zone. The four hilly laps of the Harewood estate were breathtaking. Literally. I finished the cycle in 57.42 (26km) and handed over to James.
James burst into life and sprinted off into the muddy, wet and hilly terrain of Harewood. He set a fantastic time of 22.01 (5.5km) to bring our team home in a total time of 1hr 35 minutes, 10 seconds.A fantastic experience and we were over the moon with a podium finish on our first outing. Hopefully we can improve on that next year!
